Gwesty Seren

About

Gwesty Seren is a 10 bedroom 3* hotel based in the village of Llan Ffestiniog, a small, quiet village situated in the heart of Snowdonia, one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK for people from all over the world. It was established by a company called SEREN (literally translated ‘Star’) that has been providing professional care support for people with learning and physical disabilities since 1996. As a result of its experiences organising regular holiday breaks for its own service users all over the UK and beyond, it had become evident that, although many hotels and those offering holiday accommodation always insisted that they were providing for people with disabilities or impairment, this was never the case when they arrived at the venue. As a consequence the company resolved that it would develop a hotel complex that would be designed specifically for those with some kind of physical or learning disability as a priority. In April 2014 it achieved its aim of opening a 10 bedroom 3* hotel which since that time has proved very popular with the thousands that have stayed there. It was always the intention that holidays could be shared with family members, friends and carers. In other words, whilst the facilities would be welcoming and user friendly, the hotel would be seamless like any other normal 3* hotel. Alternatively Seren itself can offer fully comprehensive professional care packages if that is what is required. Entertainment, both within the hotel and available at other venues ranging from the lively to the quiet, is arranged as part of established packages (More detailed information is available). The menu can range from choirs and traditional Welsh music to rock ‘n roll, musicals, modern day music and even classical fare.

Everything at the hotel is designed with those with a variety of disabilities in mind from convenient lifts inside and outside to wide corridors convenient for wheelchairs, chair lifts, big and wide bedrooms with walk in showers and bathrooms, hearing loops, internal ramp from the reception to the restaurant, high ceilings and light airy décor, a restaurant that can cater for those people on special diets and so on. If the hotel cannot cater for it then it would need to know about it as soon as possible!

And, once you have arrived there it’s when the fun start! Within 20 miles of the venue you can experience a variety of activities that range from the leisurely and laid back to one of the most active tourist areas and high quality attractions in Europe. In nearby Blaenau Ffestiniog, just three miles down the road you have Zip World, Bounce Below, Mountain bike tracks, the Llechwedd slate heritage centre and the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway – that can carry you on a 60 mile ride around the north west of Wales. You can also canoe, climb rope wires, partake in other water based sports, go to a ten pin bowling alley, cycle using custom built bikes for the disabled, go fishing and a variety of other lively activities. Or you can go walking and view wonderful countryside. And, of course, there are castles! Indeed there is a choice of five 12th. and 13th. century castles within 30 miles of the hotel. You can fill each day of your holiday break, every day of the week.

SEREN can provide professional care support. Please contact the hotel for more information.

Map & Directions

Road Directions

The A55 dual carriage way is the main transport system in the north of Wales. This is part of the European road network and links with most motorways in England. At Queensferry on the Welsh border (1.5 hours away from the hotel) you can join the M6 and M56 and subsequently routes like the M1. You leave the A55 at Llandudno, Junction 19, head for Betws y Coed, Llanrwst and Dolgellau. Blaenau Ffestiniog is around 50 minutes from Junction 19.

From the south the M4 and M5 at some stage join other motorways that can link to the A55. From Cardiff it is the A470 that runs from the capital city of Wales to Llandudno. This is single carriage way and will take 3.5 hours from Cardiff.

Public Transport Directions

Contrary to most rural areas Blaenau Ffestiniog is well served by the rail network. It is possible to travel from any part of the UK -and beyond!- by train. The London Euston to Holyhead line passes along the north of Wales coast and there is a direct link from one of the stops, Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog. In other words, you can travel direct from London needing only one change to reach the town. The link from the Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog is a scenic route that runs through some of the most spectacular scenery around.

Eight miles from the town you have the Cambrian Coast line that connects the area with Birmingham and the midlands of England. Although not the fastest of services it is undoubtedly one of the most scenic train journeys in the British Isles.

The Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway has one of its main stations in Blaenau Ffestiniog. This is mainly a tourist attraction (with special rates available for those with disabilities). This links the town with most of the county of Gwynedd as it is possible to ride from Blaenau Ffestiniog directly to Caernarfon, 30 miles away.

Bus services, as in most rural areas, tend to be hit and miss but Blaenau Ffestiniog is linked to many other towns in the area including Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Pwllheli, Barmouth, Dolgellau and so on. All of these towns are worth visiting as they can offer  additional interest to your holiday.

Gwesty Seren can arrange pick ups and drop offs from the hotel to the local stations.
