The Olde House

Penpont Farm, a 550 acre working farm in Chapel Amble, north Cornwall, has been in the Hawkey Family for over 100 years.

In 1976, farmer Andrew Hawkey and his wife Janice converted a barn into two holiday cottages.  They proved so popular that the Hawkeys converted another couple of barns shortly after, and The Olde House holiday cottage business was born.  Over the last 40+ years, most of the old barns have been converted and 14 purpose-built cottages have been added, so that there are now 28 holiday cottages.

All the cottages are different, offering families many options of layouts suitable for differing needs.  Our website shows a comprehensive guide to our accommodation, with many photos and a floorpan of each cottage.  An access statement can be found at the bottom of the home page.

Last year, work was completed on a luxurious new pool and spa, with the old pool building now converted into a lounge and games room.  The new pool features a disabled access/family changing/wet room.

Other facilities include outdoor tennis courts, indoor and outdoor play areas, a pets’ corner, a bird hide with ramp access and lower windows suitable for a wheelchair user and young children, and a farm trail, opening up the land to the public with a permissive footpath.

It’s a real family business, with Andrew and Janice’s sons Shaun and Olly, and their wives Jaime and Lauren, all living and working around the farm.  The small team of staff are dedicated and long-serving.

The aim is to provide memorable family holidays within a typical Cornish farm, giving guests the opportunity to experience farm life and explore Cornwall from a prime location.

More than just holiday cottages, our extensive facilities and school holiday activities, offer guests a great holiday experience.  Guest feedback shows that many choose us for the working farm aspect and the chance to get up close to the animals and working practices, especially during our lambing seasons, when guests are invited on a tour of the sheds and given the opportunity to witness live births and bottle-feed tame lambs.

During the school holidays, the Hawkey Family run free activities, including pond dipping, woodland fun, falconry, laser clay shooting, farm rides and communal barbecues.

All our facilities and activities are free, which encourages our guests to join in and allows them to enjoy their holiday experience without worrying about extra costs.

Where possible, we shop local, providing a Cornish cream tea for all our guests on arrival, featuring Boddingtons jam with scones and clotted cream made less than 5 miles away.

Penpont Store, our borrowing shop, is a big hit with our guests.  It holds an array of items that may be useful during their holiday, which are all free to borrow, including beach gear, indoor and outdoor games, baby and toddler equipment and baking boxes.

We are teamed up with local surf school Wavehunters to offer our guests 10% discount.

Our pre-arrival email asks our guests if they have any special requirements, so that we can make any adjustments in order to improve their experience.  All needs are different, there is no “one size fits all’ solution and we are happy to do our best for every request.
