You are here: UK Regions > The Channel Islands > Things to do in the Channel Islands
When it comes to finding something to do, you’ll never be bored when visiting the Channel Islands. The archipelago consists of a number of small islands, some of which are uninhabited and make excellent destinations for scenic daytrips and for points of interest on boat trips, while the larger islands: Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Alderney and Herm are full of fascinating history, wildlife, beautiful beaches and plenty of opportunity for a spot of island hopping.
Sark and Herm are both largely unspoiled, cars are prohibited and instead you have horse and carts and mobility aids to get about. Sark is considered to be the jewel in the crown of the Channel Islands and was the world’s first dark sky island, making star gazing an absolute must for anyone visiting the islands.
One of the biggest draws of the Channel Islands is their diverse history. Many of the islands feature ruins and architecture that dates back to the Neolithic period and there are castles and fortifications remaining from the reign of Henry VIII onwards.
History buffs will be keen to find out more about the islands during WWII when they were occupied by German forces – many of the evidence of this remains along the coastal areas with bunkers and fortifications which can still be seen on many of the islands. Jersey was also the home of King Charles II after his exile and a monument stands on Alderney to commemorate the royal visit of Queen Victoria.
As some of the islands don’t permit cars and also don’t have street lamps and other street furniture common on the mainland, it is very easy to be transported back into yesteryear – this really is the place to be for history buffs.
Another draw of the Channel Islands is the countless beaches, harbours and easily accessible open water. Ferries regularly operate between the various islands so you can easily spend the days exploring each one, while paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking and more are also on offer, with sessions for every age and ability.
Of course, you can’t come to the Channel Islands and not explore the beaches, many of the beaches feature golden sand, crystal clear waters and fascinating rock pools making them ideal for children, sun bathing and more. The Channel Islands feature the best weather in the British Isles as well as the longest sunlight hours, so whatever the season, a beach trip is a must! Many of the accommodation providers have beach adapted wheelchairs available for hire, so everyone can enjoy days out on the sand.
If you like to indulge in a bit of retail therapy, Jersey and Guernsey are both ideal places to visit. You’ll find top brands, designer goods, department stores, eclectic high streets, regular markets and quirky antiques all VAT free.
The shopping areas of the Channel Islands feature plenty of places for stopping to rest and refresh with cafes, bars and more dotted along the route.
If that wasn’t enough, the Channel Islands are awash with wildlife. The islands have Europe’s southern most puffin population, an island full of rabbits and over 300 different bird species, so whatever you enjoy – there is something for everyone in the channel islands.
