The historic parkland is home to old oaks, secluded ponds, a National Nature Reserve, ancient wood pasture, which supports an array of wildlife, including a herd of red and fallow deer and a flock of rare-breed Portland sheep. There’s lots of ways to explore Calke's inspiring parkland, from short circular walks to longer hikes around the wider estate.
Nestled into a peaceful woodland, Calke Explore is the perfect base to begin your outdoor adventures, with an exciting natural play area, cycle hire, and access to walking and cycling routes. The Tramway Trail is a multi-use route for walkers, cyclists and mobility vehicles, offering a scenic journey through woodland, farmland, pasture, and some of the old horse-drawn tramway that linked Ticknall to Ashby.
The walled gardens are a sensory delight, with heavenly scents, the gentle hum of insects and bursts of colour everywhere you look. Admire impressive displays on the rare surviving auricula theatre in the Flower Garden, take in towering fruits and vegetables in the Physic Garden or peep inside the Gardener’s Bothy, which echoes the history of Calke’s working gardens.
Refuel with refreshments from the restaurant, café or kiosk at Calke Explore. Then finish the day with a visit to the shop and stop by the second-hand bookshop to pick up your next read.
For opening times, please visit the Calke Abbey website.
