One of the best ways to travel around the UK is by using the rail network. The UK train network is extensive and is a great way to cut down on your carbon footprint.
Each train company has their own accessibility policy and some will require you to book assistance when planning your journey, while others will have porters available at the station on hand to help you every step of the way.
Over the past couple of years, the UK's stations have been working hard to make themselves as accessible as possible, adding in new lifts, step free access and wheelchair friendly carriages. Transport for London have been working to make travel around the capital easier for those with additional needs.
Many stations across the network feature step free access and lifts down to the platform. The newest tube line, the Elizabeth Line, is step free and features new trains and platforms that are more accessible.

Transport for London also manages London's buses and the hire bikes, some of which are accessible. You can find out more about accessible journeys across the network here.
In the UK, those that are registered disabled can travel for free across the country using the bus network. Passes are issued by your local council and can be used anywhere in England.
Buses do have space for one wheelchair and priority seating which should be kept free for passengers with additional needs. When it comes to embarking and disembarking, drivers are required to give reasonable assistance to disabled people however this does not mean physically lifting passengers or heavy mobility equipment.
The UK's coaches are run by independent companies, all of which have their own accessibility policies. Contact the company you are planning to travel with for the full details of their accessibility facilities and policies.
There are companies that have space for wheelchairs, ramps to help with boarding and disembarking.
You can find taxi companies that have accessible and adapted vehicles for hire. It is always best to book your taxi journey in advance to ensure that there is a vehicle available for you. You can find reputable taxi firms from your accommodation provider and also the local area's council.
Ferries help you get to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and other areas outside of the UK mainland and are run by private companies all of which have their own accessibility facilities and policies. Many of the UK's ports and docks have been adapted to make it easier for guests using wheelchairs and other mobility devices, though we recommend speaking to the ferry company you intend to travel with to confirm their policy.
Disabled passengers can get help when travelling on a cruise ship using any port from within the UK, any ferry that is leaving from or return to the UK or any local ferry services, for instance river buses.
Different airlines and airports have different facilities for disabled people. The majority of UK airports are part of the Sunflower Lanyard scheme and there is passenger assistance available on all airelines. If you have a sensory, physical or learning disability that affects your mobility, you have the right to help at specific arrival points, check ins, moving through the air port and boarding the plane at airports in the UK and the EU. You also have the right to help because of your age or for temporary illness or injury. Mobility aids also do not count towards your luggage allowance.
Guests using planes for domestic or international flights have the right to travel with an assistant dog and airlines will also allow you to travel with a companion should you need extra help.
You will need to check with the individual airports and airlines for for details and to book any assistance.
You can find additional access and transport information at a tourist information centre. Everywhere you visit in the UK will have a tourist information centre of some kind, in larger cities, there will be several depending on whereabouts you are, while in smaller towns, these could be run by the council and you’ll need to find the appropriate building to access these services. These centres are run by people who are experts in the local area and are always happy to help you get the most of your visit.
Feel free to pop in for friendly, reliable advice on just about anything from where they recommend stopping for refreshments, to which attractions are nearby. They are also able to help with accommodation, should you decide you want to make your stay longer.
These centres are scattered all over the country. It is always an idea to do a bit of research beforehand so you know where the tourist information centre is for the area you’re visiting before you depart.

If you’re visiting the coast or spending time near an estuary or other body of water, you’ll need to know the tide times so you can plan when it is safe to be on the beach or to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time for certain activities, such as boating or dolphin spotting.
