About

Work began on the Southend-on-Sea theatre back in the 1930s. World War II stopped the building work and the theatre had its grand opening almost 30 years later in 1964.

The venue closed in 1991 to construct the foyer bar and balcony. Since its reopening in 1992, The Cliffs Pavilion has established itself as one of the South East’s leading live entertainment venues, welcoming thousands of customers every year. The theatre’s comfortable auditorium seats up to 1657. It occupies an unrivalled position on the cliffs overlooking the Thames Estuary in Westcliff-on-sea.

Our eclectic programme includes West End musicals, classical concerts, top-named vocalists, comedians, children’s shows, pantomime and even rock concerts. Our annual pantomime has seen stars such as Rylan, Bradley Walsh, Judge Rinder and Stacey Solomon playing to full houses.

The Cliffs café bar is open to all every day and has stunning views across the river. It serves light lunches, cakes and snacks and is open before every performance.

In addition to the main auditorium, the Cliffs Pavilion has two other rooms that can be used for events, the Admiral’s Room and the Maritime Room situated on the lower ground floor. The Maritime Room hosts its own programme of great live events such as a regular comedy club, a pie and mash quiz and a jazz club. Both rooms can be hired for weddings, wakes, parties or conferences and business functions.

There is good access to the building with flat floor entry and a customer lift. There are accessible toilets, wheelchairs for hire and an induction hearing loop.

Some staff are trained in BSL, sight guide, Neurodiversity Awareness and communicating effectively with people living with dementia.

Please see our visual story here.

In 2024 a major refurbishment began which will see a new restaurant and improved facilities at the Cliffs Pavilion.
