This September marks the nineth World Alzheimer’s Month, a month long campaign to raise awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s and other similar conditions such as dementia.  At Tourism for All we work with a number of establishments with facilities in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable stay or day out for those with Alzheimer’s and other similar conditions. You can find accommodation here and things to do here.

There are several organisations raising awareness during September, each offering support and advice for those with Alzheimer’s and their families. One organisation, Playlist for Life works with families to help them create personal playlists to help with the effects of Alzheimer’s.

The charity was founded in 2013 by Sally Magnusson, the broadcaster, who experienced dementia after her mother’s diagnosis. The charity is founded on scientific research that found that listening to a playlist of favourite songs can make living with dementia easier and happier. They work with individuals to help them create a unique, personal playlist, gathering all the songs that are most attached to memorable events and emotions and how families and carers can use this playlist to make life better for those with dementia.

These playlists are created using theories investigated at Stanford University in the US which includes the use of therapeutic scheduling, where individuals listen to music for 30 minutes before embarking on something that is usually triggering for them. You can find out more and how to support them during World Alzheimer’s Month on their website here.
