Christmas is the most magical time of the year – unless you have sensitivity to lights, loud noises and changes to your routine. It can be a stressful time for those on the Autism spectrum, so we’ve put together some tips to make sure that your family has a very merry autism friendly Christmas this year.

  • Create a schedule
    Many people on the autism spectrum can become overwhelmed when unexpected guests arrive or there is disruption in their day to day routines. Make a schedule of when people can visit your home and when you are going to visit them and share it with the family so everyone can prepare and work it into their routine.
  • Get an advent calendar
    Countdowns are a great way to help those on the spectrum prepare for big events, so get an advent calendar and stick to it!
  • Have a non Christmas room
    Alternatively, keep all your decorations in one space so that should anyone get overwhelmed they have quiet places they can go to and to limit the changes to the general home environment.
  • Make time for non festive activities
    Sometimes we all need a break from the relentless reminders that it is Christmas so create some time to do something normal or quiet, away from the tinsel and bright lights.
  • Support local organisations offering quiet hours
    One thing we all enjoy at Christmas is visiting a grotto or a local event – but they can be overwhelming, so look out for those offering autism friendly options and support them.
  • Do what works for you
    The most important thing is to just do what works best for you – it doesn’t matter what others are doing around you, Christmas is about family and celebrating, so create your own traditions.
