As part of their new campaign, 150 Days of Community, Sainsbury has launched a new initiative for deaf customers by turning one of its stores into ‘Signsbury’s’ in order to help their hard of hearing customers.

The scheme originated at a Sainsbury’s store in Bath after a member of staff with hearing impairments saw an opportunity to make life easier for customers living with similar conditions. Sam Brook, who works at the Bath store which was renamed Signsbury’s put forward a range of ideas to help make shopping in store a more straightforward experience for the 11 million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK.

For the campaign, staff at Sainsbury’s learned how to sign several common words and phrases which were then used when interacting with customers. The store’s manager, Paul Robertson, told reporters: “I thought it was the perfect time to use the opportunity to explore new ways to make our store more deaf friendly. We have many hard of hearing customers in Bath and always want to make their experience as brilliant as possible and we hope Signsbury’s will help better their time in store even more.”

Not only did 100 members of staff learn sign language, but screens were installed around the store which demonstrated how to sign the words that would be commonly found in super markets like milk and bananas.

The 150 Days of Community project will focus on a range of events and fundraising in order to support the communities that use the stores. They range from the sign language project seen in Bath to funding community gardens and creating links with local care homes.
