The Government has announced that they will be providing an £1,000 a year to student nurses focusing on mental health and learning disability nursing for each year that they are at university.

This is part of the manifesto pledge to increase nursing numbers by 50,000 by 2025. The care minister, Caroline Dinenage, told reporters that more nurses specialising in learning disabilities will be needed in the years to come. She said: “The expertise of learning disability nurses is essential as they provide tailored care that can help people become more independent. I want to see more people considering a career in learning disability nursing, helping to achieve our NHS long term plan ambition to improve care for those with learning disabilities.”

Mike Adams, England’s Director for the Royal College of Nursing, reported that mental health and learning disability nursing numbers had decreased after the removal of a nursing bursary in 2017. He has said that this funding is a recognition of this but that funding will need to be increased further to help widen the nursing workforce.

The Chancellor will be revealing more details in the budget which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
