During the first week of April every year, autism charities and organisations come together to raise awareness and funds, so that we can all help enrich the lives of those with autism. In 2020, the week of campaigning begins on 30th March and runs until 5th April with World Autism Day taking place on 2nd April.

Current statistics show that there is around 700,000 people on the autism spectrum living in the UK and so it is imperative that we work together to make sure that schools and businesses have the resources in place to accommodate those living with autism. According to numbers from the National Autism Society, one in three adults with autism have experienced mental distress due to a lack of support and 17% of children with autism have found themselves suspended from school because of a lack of understanding.

The National Autism Society have a range of resources on their website and suggestions of ways that you can join in with World Autism Awareness Week. They say: “World Autism Awareness Week is a unique time for everyone to learn more about autism whether it is the general public, teachers or politicians. Almost everyone has heard of autism, but we continue to hear from those on the autism spectrum who struggle due to misunderstandings about autism.”
