You’ll know from looking through our members that there are loads of places across the UK that are wheelchair accessible, from the more obvious to the more obscure, it has never been easier to enjoy a day out.

More and more places are becoming accessible all the time and with recent Government proposals to install Changing Places toilets in all new buildings, the number of places you can visit is only going to go up. Of course, at the moment with restrictions in place due to the covid-19 pandemic, we are limited on where we can go, but we’ve put together a few ideas of wheelchair friendly places you can visit during the summer to inspire you.

Go to the park

As lockdown restrictions ease, many of the UK’s gardens and parks are being reopened, particularly those managed by the National Trust and similar organisations. Several of them have been adapted to make them wheelchair friendly, with wide, flat paths and their accessible facilities are all clearly advertised on their website. You’ll need to prebook your visit via the National Trust website for all their parks and gardens, but others you are free to attend, as long as you maintain social distancing.

Visit the beach

Why not make the most of the sunshine by heading to the beach? Throughout the UK, beaches are offering adapted wheelchairs to hire so you can travel around on the sand without any problems. The piers and harbour areas of Britain’s beaches are level and have a flat surface so you can easily access the attractions and eateries that are often found there. Make sure to check before you travel to see what restrictions are in place and remember to stay as local as you can and to follow the government regulations.

Go to a botanical garden

Wherever you are in the UK, you’re never too far from a botanical garden. This time of year is great for those that love plants and being in the great outdoors, so why not spend some time exploring plants from around the world at a botanical garden? With the wide trails, ample parking and things to see and do, they’re a great way to see in the summer season. Once again, there may be restrictions in place, so do check before you travel and while you’re there make sure to follow all the guidance that has been set out.
