
The month long season will include a number of disability focused and led programme and discussions across the whole BBC Network. One programme includes a series of six 15 minute monologues written, directed and performed by disabled people. The CripTales series, have been curated by Mat Fraser, who will also star, as well as actors Jackie Hagan, Robert Softley Gale, Liz Carr, Carly Houston and Ruth Madeley. The monologues are all based on disabled people’s experiences from the last 50 years and will broadcast on BBC 4.
Other BBC 4 programming includes, The Disordered Eye, a film by disabled artist and film maker Richard Butchins about the impact of impaired vision on artists; Bartholomew Abominations, a radio drama rework of Batholomew’s Fair (to be broadcast on BBCRadio 4); a series of short dramas involving Grease Theatre, a disabled theatre company; and The Disability Paradox, a film created by Chris Lynch, a disabled film maker that focuses on research showing that many disabled people report having a good quality of life and how non disabled people perceive them.
BBC Radio 3 will feature a series of concerts celebrating disabled performers and composers. Presenter Nikki Fox will host a number of news packages reflecting on the anniversary across a number of the network’s news channels, while BBC Radio 5 live will host a live phone in.
Discussions will be hosted over Linkedin and will included disability activists and campaigners from around the world.
Talking about the planned programming, Nikki Fox said: “The 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act is an important moment to take stock and I’ll be providing analysis and feedback across the BBC’s news bulletins, exploring the significance of the act and its impact on the lives of disabled people now. Alongside my reports, I’m looking forward to disabled people sharing their stories and experiences across BBC networks this month in a range of documentaries, drama performances and digital content – it’s so important to hear such a rich variety of disabled voices.”
The BBC has also commissioned disability-related programmes which will be aired throughout 2021.
