The UK Government has launched their National Disability Strategy which went live on 28th July 2021. The stragey is a cross government effort to transform disabled people’s everyday lives and will build on the progress made since the Disability Discrimination Act with the hope that it will make the UK a place where disabled people can share opportunities and fully reach their potential.
The strategy was produced using the everyday experiences of disabled people, using their feedback across a range of areas, including playparks, which the government has announced they will be making more inclusive as part of the strategy. Over 16,000 people responded to surveys published by the government in order to shape policy going forward, responses have been gathered from disabled people, as well as organisations, charities, businesses, policy experts and others.
The strategy has been split into sections which will cover:
Rights and perceptions – which will aim to remove barriers, enabling people to fully participate in society
Home – aiming to create more accessible, adapted and safer homes
Transport – aiming to improve accessibility
Jobs – aiming to make jobs more inclusive and accessible
Education – ensuring that children and young people fulfil their potential
Shopping – aiming to create more consumer choice and convenience
Leisure – aiming to create more access to arts, culture, sport and the great outdoors
Public Services – aiming to make these more accessible.
Speaking about the strategy, Justin Tomlinson MP, Minister for Disabled People, said: “We are absolutely committed to putting disabled people at the heart of government policy making and service delivery.”
