The theme for 2021 World Sight Day has been revealed as #LoveYourEyes with an aim to record 1 million sight tests pledged in the lead up to the event on 14th October.

World Sight Day is an annual event which raises awareness for eye conditions and blindness and is organised by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, who are planning their most ambitious event yet.

This year, the IAPB is calling on everyone to focus on their eye health with their global #LoveYourEyes campaign, with resources, including education packs for schools and information on how to prevent sight loss and protect vision available on their website.

As part of the campaign, they are asking everyone to pledge to have a sight test, with the aim to get over 1 million tests pledged in the lead up to the event. Nearly everyone on the planet will experience a health issue with their eyes across their lifetime. It is thought that more than a billion people across the world do not have access to eye care services, something that isn’t often considered. To address the bigger picture at the country and global level, we need to be aware of our own eye health and the #LoveYourEyes campaign is all about being aware of your own eye health and to find out where to get sight tests. Eye health can also tell medical professionals more about our health in general, so knowing how to take care of your eyes is incredibly important.

Speaking about the launch of this year’s campaign, Peter Holland, CEO of IAPB, said: “Almost everyone on the planet will experience an eye health issue in their lifetime and yet more than a billion people worldwide do not have access to eye care services. This is a global issue, but one that starts with us.

“This World Sight Day, 14th October, we are calling on everyone who is able to book a sight test, an exam or a screening to check on the wellbeing of their eyes/. We are asking people to pledge their tests as part of our Everyone Counts initiative.”

On the day itself, IAPB will host a global challenge to unite the world in getting their eyes tested. Find out more about this year’s event and how to get involved: www.iapb.org/wsd2021
