This year Deaf Awareness Week starts on 2nd May with a theme of Deaf Inclusion which aims to explore the themes around inclusion in the D/deaf community.
The campaign runs annually and highlights the impact of hearing loss on everyday life and increases the visibility and inclusion of D/deaf people. Part of the campaign looks at the importance of mental health and how hearing impairments are often overlooked in day to day life.
This year, you are invited to get involved with Deaf Awareness Week by sharing your own stories and experiences on social media using #DAW2022 or #InclusionDeafness. It is hoped that by doing so, everyone can understand real life experiences that the D/deaf community live with every day. Another important part of this year’s campaign is that 19 years ago, BSL was recognised as an official language, however there is still not a BSL Act giving the language legal status and requiring government to put guidance in place so that BSL is included in public service information and announcements. Earlier this year, the British Deaf Association held a rally in London to raise awareness of this need.
This Deaf Awareness Week, why not share your experiences and write to your MP to get the Bill into law and make the world more inclusive for those that are D/deaf.
