In response to ONS figures that show that more than half (55%) of disabled people finding it difficult to afford energy bills and 36% struggling to cope with housing payments (rent or mortgage).

James Taylor, Director of Strategy at disability equality charity Scope, said: “It’s frightening that over half of disabled people find it difficult to pay their energy bills.

“Scope has heard from so many disabled people who are having to choose between being warm and powering life-saving equipment. Parents of disabled children who are having to skip meals so their kids can eat. Our helpline has been inundated with calls.

“Our new Prime Minister must do the right thing and support disabled people through this cost of living crisis.

“We also want to see him stick to his commitment to uprate benefits in line with inflation, and increase the payments made to disabled households to deal with increasing energy bills.”
