Purple Tuesday has been an international event that has taken place since 2018 and takes place every year on the 1st Tuesday of November, this year, Purple Tuesday falls on 1st November with events taking place across the world and retailers getting involved to make shopping and every day activities easier and more welcoming for people with additional needs.
Purple Tuesday was founded by a man called Mike Adams who was inspired to launch a global movement after attempting to do Christmas shopping and experiencing terrible customer service. Mike found that out of the 27 businesses he visited, 23 of them ignored him, favouring to talk to his non disabled partner instead. He wanted to help both disabled customers and organisations who wanted to improve their accessibility – hence Purple Tuesday.
This year, VisitEngland and Visit Scotland are among the partners taking part in Purple Tuesday and will be making improvements to the service they offer and a number of other shops and brands will be getting involved including Sainsbury’s, Oliver Bonas, Schuh, Ibis Hotels and football clubs, like Newcastle United.
