Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has been granted £665,000 to make improvements to the National Cycle Network Route 1 between Normanby and South Bank.

The work, which is due to start before the end of the year will improve safety and user experience on the route, with upgrades including redirecting the route onto a traffic free path and redesigning barriers to make it more wheelchair, pushchair and mobility scooter accessible.

Work will also take place to cut back vegetation and CCTV will be installed to improve user safety. The Network Development Manager told reporters: “The Lines path is well used byt the narrow surface and restrictive barriers make it a less desirable route for people cycling and inaccessible to many people in the local community. Providing a smooth surface and redesigning access controls will provide fair and inclusive access for all.”

The project will also include working with locals to improve the character of the route. Construction work will begin in December this year and is expected to be completed by Spring 2023. There will be diversions put in place during this time.
