Toy company Mattel who made history recently with their range of Barbies that celebrate diversity, have unveiled a line for Barbie’s little sister Chelsea that will see a doll with scoliosis. The doll features a removable back brace which aims to normalise the use of this kind of equipment and encouraging children to celebrate inclusion.

The team at Mattel worked with neurosurgeon Dr Luke Macyszyn, who specialises in spinal disorders and advised the designers throughout the doll’s creation.

Speaking to reporters, Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said: “We believe in the power of representation and are committed to creating dolls in a variety of looks in that kids can see themselves in Barbie and now a line celebrating Barbie’s little sister, Chelsea.”

The Chelsea doll has a removable back brace, a pink dress, white shoes and brown hair styled in waves.
