Tourettes Awareness Month 2023 starts on 15th May and runs through to 15th June. The aim of the month is to dispel some of the myths surrounding Tourretes, destigmatise it and show the public what the reality of living with Tourettes syndrome is. This year, Tourrettes Action are campaigning using the #ItsWhatMakesMeTic allowing others to share their experiences with Tourettes.

As part of the #ItsWhatMakesMeTic we’ve put together some advice on travelling around the UK with Tourettes.

While using public transport

Travelling by train or bus can be stressful and this in turn can bring on more tics, to help keep you calm, try listening to music, not only will this help block out the noise from other passengers but will also help you disguise tics should you feel self conscious. You could also try reading to give you something else to focus on.

If you have a Tourettes Action ID card or something similar, make sure to have it on you and have it to hand should anyone speak to you so they know that your tics are not voluntary.

If you are booking a train ticket, ferry ticket or other public transport, make sure to call ahead and speak to the accessibility team who will be able to help make your journey as easy as possible.

While out and about

Consider using a sunflower lanyard so people are aware that you may need assistance.

Have a RADAR key for using accessible public toilets

Check venues for companion tickets
