This year marks the 20th anniversary of Changing Places Toilets (CPTs), a milestone in the ongoing effort to make public spaces and tourism truly accessible for all.

Since the initiative began in 2005, CPTs have transformed travel for more than 250,000 people in the UK with complex disabilities. These facilities provide essential features such as hoists, adult-sized changing benches, and adequate space for carers, going far beyond the standard accessible toilet. For many, CPTs are not a convenience, but a necessity.

Over the past two decades, more than 2,000 CPTs have been installed across the UK in a range of public venues, from airports and shopping centres to museums and visitor attractions. This progress has been driven by tireless campaigning, support, and a growing recognition that accessibility must be central to inclusive tourism.

At Tourism for All UK, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting truly inclusive tourism. We encourage all tourism providers, local authorities, and venue operators to consider the installation of Changing Places Toilets as a vital part of their accessibility strategy.

Tourism should be open to everyone. As we mark 20 years of this vital initiative, we look ahead to a future where every journey can be made with dignity, confidence, and independence.
