Chichester District Council has announced  that is backing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme to better support people in the town with hidden disabilities.

The Hidden Disabilities scheme was launched at Gatwick Airport back in 2016 and has since grown to include businesses and organisations all over the UK. The scheme provides green lanyards with sunflowers on to people with hidden disabilities to discreetly alert businesses and other organisations that they might need additional help while using their services.

At a meeting of the full council on January 19th, Cllr Alan Sutton, tabled a motion calling on Chichester Council to not only promote the scheme but to actively encourage others in the town to do the same and to make sure all staff and councillors understand the impact of hidden disabilities. Cllr Sutton, who himself has a hidden disability, stated that the lanyards have been useful, especially during the pandemic, alerting people that the bearer is exempt from wearing a face mask and may have difficulty following other covid safety measures, such as social distancing.

Speaking to fellow councillors, Cllr Sutton said: “I want us to be able to not only embrace it [the scheme] but to supply the badges, so if we encounter someone within our organisation in one of our buildings, we’re able to introduce the scheme as well as embrace it.”

The motion received unanimous support from other councillors and will be actioned. This means that with the council backing the scheme, other businesses and organisations in the town will follow suite, making it a great destination for visitors looking for an accessible day out or short break.
