About

In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Channel Islands, starting 5 years of gruelling occupation. As a unique tourist attraction and experience, Jersey War Tunnels is the only place in the island where you will find the full story of this Occupation – the hardship, heartache and heroism, in the words of the people who were there.

In tunnels over thirty metres underground and nearly 1,000 metres long, visitors can find out what life was really like in Jersey during World War 2 in this extraordinary interactive exhibition.

As a product of five long years of occupation; the Tunnels bore witness to the cruelty of the Nazi regime. Built by slave and forced workers in inhumane conditions, the Tunnels imposing, cavernous entrance tunnel will take you deep into the hillside, into a network of tunnels unlike anything you have seen before. Within the Tunnels, the exhibit will guide you through the war years to understand the perils, hardship and daily gride faced by islanders living side by side with their occupiers, through to the explosive joy of Liberation. See and hear the stories of those who resisted, those who escaped, those who collaborated and those who died.

This vast network of underground tunnels was designed to allow the German occupiers to withstand Allied air raids and bombardment in the event of an invasion. In 1943, it was converted into an emergency hospital. It is now Jersey’s most visited tourist attraction, a memorial to the most difficult years in the island’s history and an award-winning exhibit.

There is a café and garden of reflection with parking available onsite. Regular bus connections operate to the main town of St. Helier and the site is easily accessible by bike.
