For the first time ever no airports in the UK have been classified as poor for accessibility, the research was revealed by the Civil Aviation Authority in their recent annual report on the disability access on the UK’s 31 largest airports which highlights the most and least accessible airports.

Fourteen UK airports have been rated as “very good”, sixteen rated as “good” and only Manchester’s airport received a “needs improvement”, which was an improvement on its previous “poor” rating. In total, there were a record number of 3.7 million requests for assistance at UK airports in the last year, a rise of over 80%.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s standards classify airports as “Very Good” if they provide high quality support on the day of travel as well as keeping in contact and consultation with its visitors. Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Norwich, Belfast City and Southampton were among those rated “Very Good” while London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London Stanstead received “Good”.

Since April this year, airports have been assessed using stricter targets to improve the passenger experience and create a more seamless journey. The Civil Aviation Authority will work closely with airports to improve accessibility for disabled passengers.

Talking about the latest results, Paul Smith, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority’s consumers and markets director said: “While it is good to see the general improvements, airports will need to continue to work hard to improve, so that they are able to meet the more demanding performance standards that we have now introduced. Where we see examples of bad practice, we will not hesitate to hold airports to account and take the necessary action.”
