Now the winter is over and the warmer weather is upon us, it’s the best time to start thinking about heading out and have fun. The UK has a host of wheelchair accessible attractions, so start planning for the summer when you can get out there and enjoy!

If you want to spend some time seeing soem amazing animals, why not take a trip to Isle of Wight Zoo? With a level entrance and level access to the majority of the displays, you can easily get around the zoo and enjoy the many exhibits.

If you want to stay on the mainland, Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm  in Bristol regularly wins awards for their accessibility facilities. The site has several zoo animals to meet including giraffes, tigers and bears and is one of the biggest zoos in the south west. The disability facilities were opened by Paralympian, Andy Lewis. They include a wheelchair accessible play area, a changing places toilet and level access to all the displays. Alternatively, why not spend a few hours at Monkey World  in Dorset? The pathways throughout the attraction are suitable for wheelchairs and there are a number of wheelchairs available to hire. As part of their accessibility project, staff members have been trained in disability knowledge or skills, including sign language.
West Midlands Safari Park is another award-winning visitor attraction with a variety of all weather attractions that have wheelchair access. The natural contours of the land mean that some areas have differing gradients, but all the enclosures are accessible and carers are admitted for free.

Not keen on spending the day at the zoo? Why not catch a show? Buxton Opera House

has a range of accessible and relaxed performances and have taken every effort to accommodate everyone. There are a number of wheelchair spaces on the ground floor in the stalls in the theatre and in the neighbouring cinema, is accessible by wheelchair and there is a level access bar. 

You could alternatively spend some time at a theme or adventure park. Paultons Park near Southampton has over seventy attractions and pathways throughout the park are suitable for wheelchair users. Some of the rides are designed with limited mobility in mind, but each one will offer advice. Sandcastle Waterpark in Blackpool is the largest Indoor Waterpark in the UK. The park hosts a year long programme of Accessible Family Evenings allowing guests to enjoy the park without the usual hustle and bustle. Make sure to check their website for more details.
