Making sure you have everything packed before your holiday can be a nightmare at the best of times but is even more stressful when you have more to think about than what clothes to pack. Here at Tourism for All we don’t want having much needed equipment put you off getting away on holiday, so we’ve compiled a list to take the stress out of packing and give you more time to focus on having the best time ever.

Here are our recommendations of what to pack for your holidays.

Mobile Phone and charger

Yes, it goes without saying that your phone is probably with you all the time anyway, but you’d be surprised how often they get left behind! Having a fully charged phone for your journey is a must and it is always important to keep up to date with your friends and family, especially if you want to make them jealous with pictures of all the fun you’re having!

Why not grab yourself a special device just for taking on holiday? There are some phones that are designed to be easily used in case of emergencies and can be pre programmed with people’s numbers you can reach via one button and SOS call buttons that will send your exact location to your contacts. These phones are particularly good for anyone travelling with dementia or who struggle to use the more traditionally designed touch screen phones. Many phone service providers stock them and can help you find the one that best suits your needs.

Water bottle

Firstly, it will save you money if you take a bottle of water/squash with you for the journey and while you’re there but secondly, it is important to stay hydrated, especially in warm weather. Certain health conditions and medications will make you more susceptible to dehydration, so having a bottle to hand is always recommended. If you can, try to get one with a straw and some kind of easy grip or handle as this will make it easier for people who have low mobility or issues with swallowing to stay hydrated.

Suction grab rails

You can find a range of accessible accommodation providers here, many of which have grab rails installed, but just in case your chosen property doesn’t have them, there is a mix up with your room or you need them for the journey, suction grab rails can be easily attached to walls and surfaces without damaging them. These are really easy to throw in your bag as they don’t take up too much space and are great for that added peace of mind. You can find suction grab rails at a variety of care shops and even places like Amazon.

Rollator

Many rollators are foldable, which makes them even easier to add to your suitcase, but they also have built in seats and storage areas, so they are perfect for having with you on day trips. If you’re someone who can walk but struggle to maintain balance or stay on your feet for long periods of time, these are a great tool.

Folding commodes and shower chairs

Like we said, you’ll find plenty of accessible accommodation providers here who offer adapted toilets and have shower chairs available in their rooms, but if you find yourself in need, taking these foldable items in your suitcase will make the journey much less stressful. Most folding commodes have backrests which can double up as a handle, which is even better! Shower seats are also useful – the travel ones can be adjusted, so many of them can be used in smaller spaces too.

Dossett boxes/pill reminders

Being out of your routine can make remembering to take your medication difficult and having lots of medicines can make it confusing, so an absolute must for travelling is to have a Dossett box where you can put the exact amount of medication you need and split it out into the days and times you need to take it. Pill reminders are also a good idea – these little devices will sound an alarm or vibrate to remind you that it is time for your next dose which is great if you’re on the move and lose track of the time.
