Water Portals, a new immersive installation created by Suffolk artist Henry Driver, has opened at Level Centre in Rowsley.

Running until 5 January 2024, Water Portals is an interactive digital journey that explores the microscopic world of water. Visitors can discover the beautiful microbes that live in our rivers, lakes and oceans, and understand the crucial roles they play in creating a healthy world. The installation explores how these important microbes are at risk from climate change, and what simple things can be done to make a difference.

The installation was created by artist Henry Driver, a digital artist and game developer who creates projects that connect to the environment. Henry said:

“While in residence at Level Centre in 2022, I was inspired by the beauty of the Rivers Derwent and Wye, especially where the two rivers meet close to the gallery, creating mesmerising patterns of swirling water. With WaterPortals I wanted to celebrate rivers, as well as dive beneath the surface to show the vital microscopic life that live in our waters. To connect audiences to why these tiny creatures are important, such as how they create up to 50% of all the oxygen we breathe, as well as help to form clouds and rain.

I worked with scientists to inform the project, who generously shared their research and advice. WaterPortals is created using footage of the Rivers Derwent & Wye, as well as 3D digital visualisations of microbes inspired by scientific imagery.

My aim was to reveal to audiences the hidden world of water, at various scales and show how it's under threat from humanity, but also how we can individually, collectively, and governmentally protect and make our waters healthy.”

Henry has shown work across the world and exhibited at numerous galleries in the UK including Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain, Whitechapel and Barbican. He was commissioned to create ‘Secrets of Soil’ for BBC Arts and Arts Council England.

Water Portals was created using solar energy. The LEVEL team is offsetting CO2 during the exhibition by reducing their reliance on car usage and planting a tree for every group that visits. Visitors can also play their part by choosing from five environmental pledges about protecting our water.

Water Portals is suitable for everyone, including school groups and families. The installation links to several National Curriculum topics and there is an education pack available to download.

Water Portals is free to visit, but advance booking is advisable. For more information visit: www.levelcentre.com/water-portals
